In a long run hypertension leads significant impairment in cognition. Yoga is forms of mind-body medicine shown to be effective in cognitive enhancement. Aim: To study the impact of one week Yoga based residential program on cognitive function of hypertensive patients. Methodology: Thirty hypertensive subjects within age range 30-60 years (Mean±SD;57.7±7.74), who visited SVYASA University campus to attend one week residential yoga program for hypertension treatment, were assessed for cognitive function by administering D2 test before and after one week of intervention. Subjects’ having diabetes, any form of psychiatric problems, history of head injury, learning disability were excluded from the study. Paired sample t test was applied to see the pre post differenceItem To study the safety and immediate effect of yogic gut cleansing technique in diabetes patients (a self as control study)(S Vyasa, 2015-01-12) Seema PatilBackground: Hatha Yoga emphasizes the role of cleaning the body through various kriyas (cleansing techniques) as a preparation for maintaining a healthy body. Health is of the utmost importance for spiritual progress.Cleaning the gut is one of the first steps in the practice of Hatha Yoga. Studies have shown that Varisar Dhauti (LSP = Laghu Shankha Prakshalan) reduces Blood preassure, pain in the lumbar region, disability, anxiety and depression and increases spinal flexibility and quality-of-life in chronic low back pain (CLBP) patients. Observations during the pilot studies on the yogic gut-cleansing technique called Varisar Dhauti, popularly known as laghu shankha prakshalana, appeared to be one of the most feasible, adoptable, detoxifying and safe methods in immediate reduction of (FBS) Fasting Blood Sugar levels in Diabetes patients. Objective: To study the safety and effect of Varisar Dhauti, the yogic gut-cleansing technique in Diabetes patients. Materials and Methods: This self as control study recruited 30 mild to moderate Diabetic patients. The study involved drinking lukewarm water (with or without a herbal combination of Triphala) followed by a set of specific yoga postures that would apparently move the water through the digestive tract and hold it, as per the capacity. The practice was administered on the 4thand 6th day. In this self as control study, 30participants who satisfied the selection criteria were given LSP with normal water and Tripahal water. All 30subjects were assessed on two occasions (4th and 6th day) before and after the practice of LSP either with normal water orwith Triphala water. Results of these two days have been analysed. Results: Data were analysed for fasting blood sugar levels in diabetes group after Varisar Dhauti ( Laghu Shanka Prakshalana = LSP), the data were normally distributed in Triphala water LSP, paired sample T-test was conducted and the P- value is 0.001. and the data of Normal water LSP were not normally distributed, wilcoxan signed rank test was conducted and the P-value is 0.001, so reduction in fasting blood sugar level is more significant in Triphal water LSP compared to Normal water LSP. There were no adverse effects reported during or after the Varisar Dhauti. The number of visits to clear the bowel after the procedure was significantly higher after Varisar Dhauti with Triphala water than with normal water. There was an increase in comfort level and quality of sleep after both the sessions. Note: Sampling was not randomized control, it was convenient sampling. Our aim was not to generalize the results of the study to the population. CONCLUSION: This study provides the first evidence of immediate blood sugar levels afterYogic gut-cleansing kriyas. The study makes it clear thatboth Normal water and Triphala water can be used safely in patients suffering from DiabetesMellitus. Addition of Triphala to the water of Varisar Dhauti provides better cleansing and significant reduction in FBS. Thus Triphala seems to be more beneficial in reduction FBS as an immediate effect. Three days of practice of exercises of the same specific set prior to the experiment was more useful in improving the subjective and probably even the objective measures of health in patients although this design has had a very high number of dropouts.Item “Integrated approach of yoga therapy (IAYT)” for neurology and oncology, asthma and hypertension, anxiety and depression, arthritis, back pain, diabetes mellitus, gastro- intestinal disorders and obesity and PPH(S Vyasa, 2015-01-12) Kanwar, Sonal“Behind every sick man, there is a spiritual man. Behind a diabetic, there is a yogi. Behind a man suffering from depression, there is an aspirant. When a patient comes for help one should teach him yoga and make him better. Of course his sickness should be treated, but one should not stop there. One should take that person further into the spiritual domain of life” By Swami Satyananda Saraswati. The study to 16 cases of 16 aliments is presented in this dissertation, which ultimately proved IAYT is an effective way to handle vast range of illness and health conditions, through management, cure & prevention. In many cases signs and symptoms of illness were reduce & their drugs/ medication which they have been taking for years started weaning. Some got a handle of on their lives through corrective measures of dealing with life by following yogic life style... Others benefitted by the calm and serene environment, which contributed to overall healing. This dissertation is divided into 2 main parts: Part I: It includes introduction, concepts of yoga and its Integrated Approach to Yoga therapy (IAYT) Part II: It includes brief description of 16 diseases undertaken during on job training at Arogyadhama along with case studies with their respective causes, signs & symptoms & general line of treatment, ending it’s with a conclusion.Item To Study The Safety and Usefulness of Adding Laghu Sankhapraksalana to The Integrated Approach of Yoga Therapy in Patients with Essential Hypertension(S-VYASA, 2014-08-19) Mashyal, PrakashTo study the safety and usefulness of adding laghu Sankhapraksalana to the integrated approach of yoga therapy in patients with essential hypertension. Background: There are several studies that have documented the usefulness of different types of yoga practices (pranayamas, shavasana and meditations) in the management of mild and moderate hypertension. Our pilot studies and clinical observations on patients who are admitted to the residential and/or out-patient centers of SVYSA also had shown beneficial effects of integrated approach to yogatherapy (IAYT). Yoga and ayurveda texts emphasize the role of clearing the bowel as a very important component in the management of hypertension. For this, they recommend a yoga technique called shankhaprakshalana. In our clinical pilot studies at the center we tried to incorporate this to see the add-on effects. But this was not acceptable either to the clinicians or the patients because of the effort involved in the practice. Hence the laghu sankhapraksalana kriya evolved and recommended by Bihar School of Yoga was tried with encouraging results. Also, ayurveda recommends the use of a mild herbal laxative for clearing the bowel. Hence the present well planned self as control pilot study was undertaken.
