    Effect of Integrated Approach of Yoga Therapy(IAYT) on Antioxidant Status of Obese Subjects

    Background: Obesity is a growing public health concern in modern societies. Physical inactivity and unhealthy diet have been identified as major risk factors for obesity Abdominal obesity has been suggested to be associated with overstimulation of the hypothalamic pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis due to chronic stress and altering diurnal cortisol secretion. Abnormal regulation of the HPA axis and perceived stress-dependent cortisol levels are strongly related to perturbations of the endocrine axis as well as abdominal obesity with metabolic abnormalities. Obese patients with BMI above 35 kg/m2 show low plasma antioxidants (carotenoids and vitamin E). This may result in increased oxidative stress. Importantly, even short-term yoga based comprehensive lifestyle intervention led to notable reduction in body mass index, blood pressure, and blood glucose with a clinically meaningful improvement in lipid profile. Methods: 38 male and female subjects in the age group of 18-55 years were selected based on exclusion criteria. Total Antioxidant Status, BMI and lipid profile was estimated before any intervention. They were subjected to Integrative approach of yoga therapy including anasas, pranayama, diet, meditation techniques for a period of 6 to 15days. After 6-15days of IAYT, Total Antioxidant Status, SUA, Albumin, BMI, lipid profile and other biochemical variables were estimated. Results: We observed a statistically significant increase in serum uric acid, AST(Aspartate transaminase), ALT( alanine aminotransferase), Bhramari time and decrease in hip circumference, waist circumference, BMI, Systolic BP, Diastolic BP after 10 days of Integrative approach of yoga therapy. Also, we observed a decrease in FBS, systolic blood pressure, triglycerides and an which is not statisticallysignificant. Conclusion: Total Antioxidant Capacity would have been significant in the present study if the intervention was for a longer duration. And the anthropometric and certain lipid profile results clearly suggest that Yoga can be used as an adjunct therapy for lifestyle modification and management of obesity and related complications.

    Effect of “three months yogasana practice on blood pressure, lipid profile, hematological parameters in healthy adults”

    Title: Effect of “Three Months Yogasana Practice on Blood Pressure, Lipid Profile, Hematological Parameters. Background: Yoga has positive impact on health. Various studies have formed significant role of yoga in hypertension, diabetes, asthma etc. long term of practice of yoga have positive role in hematological variables. Aim: Current study was conducted to see short term effect of Yogasana intervention on Hematological Parameters,Lipid Profile, and Anthropometric variables in healthy volunteers. Methodology: Twenty healthy volunteers (male-12, female-08) with average age (30.91±11.88) of Vishwa Yuvak Kendra (NGO) at Chankya Puri, New Delhi, were recruited in this study. All the subjects underwent yoga intervention for three days a week with two hours daily for three months. Lipid profile; total cholesterol (TC=0.037), triglyceride (TG=0.372), high density lipid (HDL=0.168), low density lipid (LDL=0.092), very low density lipid (VLDL=0.041), hematological parameters; hemoglobin, total leucocytes count, (TLC=0.009), differential leucocytes’ count (DLC=P-0.008,L-0.009,E-0.943), body mass index (BMI=0.343), pulse rate, blood pressure, were assessed before & after the intervention. Result: Paired sample t-test showed significant reduction in total cholesterol, LDL, BMI, significant improvement in hemoglobin. Wilcoxon signed rank test showed significant decrease in systolic blood pressure and borderline significant decrease in diastolic blood pressure. Conclusion: Three months of Yogasana intervention may help in improving hemoglobin percentage, and helps in reducing bad cholesterol, BMI and systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

    Part –I Stress – According to Scriptures and Modern Science Part –II Co-relation of Stress with BMI, GTT & TSH in the First Trimester of Pregnancy

    Stress refers to the consequence of the failure of an organism, human or other animal torespond adequately to mental, emotional, or physical demands, whether actual or imagined. In general, stress is related to both external and internal factors. External factors include thephysical environment, including job, relationships with others, home, and all the situations,challenges, difficulties, and expectations one is confronted with on a daily basis. Internal factors determine body's ability to respond to, and deal with, the external stress-inducing factors. Internal factors which influence the ability to handle stress include nutritional status,overall health and fitness levels, emotional well-being, and the amount of sleep and rest one would get. The symptoms of stress include a negative outlook, excessive worrying, inability to relax, eating/sleeping too much or too little, and nausea, alcohol or drug consumption. The term stress was first employed in a biological context by the endocrinologist Hans Selye in the 1930s. In his usage stress refers to a condition and stressor to the stimulus causing it. It covers a wide range of phenomena, from mild irritation to drastic dysfunction that may cause severe health breakdown. According to Selye, Stress can be either positive (Eustress) or negative (Distress). Eustress is the stress that helps in enhancing ones performance. It motivates, feels exciting and is short term. Distress on the other hand is hard to cope with and may lead to anxiety, concern and can lead to mental problems.
