Abstract
The present age of speed and competition has increased the stresses and strains.
Teachers are no exceptions. But the difference is that the teacher’s health and mental
set up will affect the bringing up of children who are the future citizens. This is a
humble attempt to examine what yoga can do in this area. Yoga is considered to be a
tool for both physical and mental wellness.
Yoga has been an integral part of life in India from time immemorial. But because of
foreign invasions, Indians began neglecting their own treasures. Yoga is one of them.
Now-a-days yoga has come to the front because of many reasons. This is an
experimental study to explore the possibilities of yoga to maintain wellness among
teachers. This is designed to assess the effect of yoga in the overall health status of
the teachers in Kerala. We have named this programme as Malaapparamba project
Malappparambu Project is a Cultural Orientation Programme and Personality
Development Programme for teachers in Kerala working in the schools under
Bharateeya Vidya Niketan, a state-wide net work of schools. BVN is the Kerala chapter
of Vidya Bharathi, a national level organization. VB is the largest NGO in the field of
education in India. The venue was Veda Vyasa Vidyalaya, Malaparamba,
Kozhikkode, Kerala.
Indian education is yoga based education (Yogaadhaarit shiksha ) and Indian
educational psychology is Paatanjala Yoga Darsana according to Vidya Bharathi. So in
this programme Yoga, its practice, theory and philosophy are given importance.
Only trained teachers (Bed, TTC, Lang Trg, IT Trg) in service only are eligible to
attend the course. They are given certificates (Photo affixed and grade of their performance shown) at the end. Certificate of Morarjee Desai Yoga centre (for Yoga
training) also are issued.
This forty-day –in-service-training (malaparamba Project) started on 17th April and
ended 26th May, 2014. A total of 120 teachers participated in this training
