Asthma Patients Practicing Integrated Approach of Yoga Therapy: A follow up Study.
Background: Integrated approach of Yoga Therapy has positive impact on Asthma
Exacerbation and need of patients to visit hospital due to Asthma attacks and sevierity.Various
studies have shown significant role of yoga in asthma. But this study a follow up study to see
effect of on IAYT even after going back from Arogyadhama.
Aims: To see the effect of IAYT practice on bronchial asthma patients on number of hospital
visits and asthma exacerbation in one year.
Methodology: 54 Participants of Pulmonary department, diagonosed with Bronchial Asthma
with an average age (30 ± 75) of Arogyadhama, Preshanti Kutiram,Bangalore,where recruited in
this study. All the subjects were communicated and followed up through E-mails and Tele
communication for three to six months, every alternate days depending on their availability.
After screening we found only 26 participants of our interest and we selected them for our study
They were assessed before & after IAYT.
Results: There is 69.89% of significant and positive change in the reduction of the No. of
Asthma Attacks and 98.03% of reduction in the No. of Hospital visits due to attack and severity
of Asthma in a period of one year among the participants practicing IAYT practices for Asthma,
given at Arogyadhama.
Before coming to IAYT way of treatment for Asthma, the average range of Asthma Attacks
among the participants were 7.15 which is reduced to 2.15 after practicing IAYT and the severity
was deviating as S.D=7.15±9.53, before coming to IAYT and it is reduced to S.D=2.15±4,56
after practicing IAYT regularly ,where as the average variation in the number of Hospital visits
due to asthma was 1.96 before coming to IAYT and it has reduced to 0.03 after practice and the
standard deviation has reduced from 1.96±4.64 to 0.03±0.19.
Conclusions: From our Retrospective study on the long term Effect of IAYT practice on the
participants of Bronchial Asthma. the results of this study revealed, IAYT practice had a
significant effect on bronchial Asthma and if it can be practiced on a regular basis along with the
Medication prescribed by their Physician, Slowly and Gradually, they can get a significant relief
and there need to visit hospital due to Asthma can be reduced to 98% and the Severity of Asthma
Attack also can be reduced by 68 %. So, IAYT can be considered as a safe, natural and effective
method of Treatment for the patients of Bronchial Asthma as an alternative and add on treatment
to their main line of treatment.
