Abstract
Background: Emotions like fear are found to prognoses’ the condition in low back pain patient.
Studies show that, yoga therapies are found to be effective in improving the psychological well
being in low back pain patients.
Aim: The aim of the current study is to access the effect of IAYT on pain-related fear and
physical function in CLBP patients.
Objective: The aim of the present study were to, to study the effect of IAYT on fear of
movement/ (re) injury in chronic low back pain patients, to study the effect of IAYT on pain
related outcomes in persons with low back pain, to study the effect of IAYT on spinal mobility in
low back pain patients.
Methodology: A pre-post experimental design was used in one week yoga program at a
residential yoga center using convenient sampling. The intervention consisted of intensive
residential yoga program comprised of asana (physical postures) designed especially for back
pain, pranayama (breathing practices), meditation, and interactive sessions on philosophical
concepts of yoga. Fear- related outcomes were assessed using Tampa scale of Kinesiophobia
(TSK) and pain – related outcomes were measured using Numeric Rating scale (NRS) for pain
and by spine flexibility which is measured using Goniometer, Sit and reach (SAR), and Straight
leg raising(SLR) at pre and post intervention.
Result: After the practice of IAYT there is a significant change (p<0.01) in TSK scores, pain,
Spinal flexibility.
Conclusion: This study demonstrated that Integrated Approach of Yoga Therapy helps in
reducing the pain-related fear and helps improving the spinal flexibility in CLBP patients. Hence
IAYT techniques can be suggested for management of fear factors in CLBP patients
